Squint is a common childhood condition that, if not picked up early, can have a detrimental effect on a child's visual development and later quality of life. In the majority of cases the exact cause remains unknown, although it may be the presenting symptom of a serious ocular or neurological disease. GPs need to appreciate the range of causes of squint, its potential consequences, and hence know when and how urgently a specialist referral is required.
