US EPA registers Nichino America’s pyraclonil

The US EPA has granted registration to Nihon Nohyaku’s US subsidiary Nichino America’s(Wilmington,Delaware)herbicide,pyraclonil,along with one technical grade product,as well as the end-use formulation,Pyraclonil 1.8 Granular.The active ingredient is intended for use on water-seeded rice in the state of California for pre-emergence and early post-emergence control of barnyard grass(Echinochloa crus-galli),watergrass(E spp),sedges,and various broadleaf weed species.The development follows a proposal to that effect from earlier this year,which subsequently underwent a 30-day public consultation.An application to register pyraclonil in the US was notified in March 2020.While another protoporphyrinogen oxidase(PPO)-inhibitor herbicide,carfentrazone,is registered in California for use on rice,the Agency notes that the registration of pyraclonil makes it the first PPO-inhibitor herbicide in the state for the control of barnyard grass and watergrass.
