It is difficult to imagine that there is a British coleopterist who has not seen any of this monumental series.Volume 1 appeared in 2012,volume 4 in 2016 and this is the third of the four volumes to be published. It follows the same pattern as previous volumes. There are illustrated keys to adults of all British and Irish species.Every species has a description, brief habitat, distribution and phenology details. There is a high quality habitus picture of a representative of every genus (473 of them),photographed by Udo Schmidt. The preface contains a list of changes from the latest checklist (Duff,2018).Volume 1 contains a detailed explanation of technical terms, but a short explanation of these is found in an eleven-page glossary. There is an extensive bibliography. As I have used the volumes,I have come to appreciate the usefulness of the family, subfamily and genus introductions, which it is very easy to skip over.
