Good open questions at the beginning can encourage the patient to talk about what is troubling them and what issues they are bringing to the consultation. Good active listening skills can open up a pathway of conversation that will enable an effective consultation to be conducted. Understanding can be checked later. Putting the patient at ease and establishing rapport are important, but not necessarily by recounting personal anecdotes. Establishing the reason for attendance is important but not usually by starting with detailed questions.
