Application and importance of entomopathogenic viruses with respect to integrated pest management

A survey is given of the importance of insect viruses as biological pesticides as part of integrated pest management systems. Information is also given about uses in less common crops such as medicinal plants, hops and tobacco. Some examples of successful biological control in greenhouses are given, including control of Mamestra brassicae with nuclear polyhedrosis virus in roses and Capsicum in greenhouses in Germany, where mortality rates of 100% were recorded. In field experiments in Germany, mortality rates of 68.9-100% mortality of M. brassicae were obtained in cabbages.
