Model embankments made of colliery spoil andfuel ash were investigated in a hydraulic channel. Sevenmodels of colliery spoil with or without additionalsealing elements from the ash, as well as one of ash itself, were constructed. The effect of granulometric composition, compaction, different types of sealings, and thesilting-up process on embankment permeability wasascertained. Embankment slope stability was also analysedwith respect to seepage pressure and strength parametersof the slope material. The effect of granulometriccomposition, thickness of sealing elements, andsilting-up on water seepage through the embankments wassignificant. On the other hand, compaction had lessinfluence than the above mentioned factors. The effect ofseepage pressure on slope stability of the embankment madefrom fuel ash was failure. General recommendations forbuilding hydraulic earth structures using the materialsinvestigated are presented.
