The effect of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and broad bean wilt virus (BBWV), in single and combined infections, on the growth of pepper [Capsicum annuum] in the field was studied. Experiments were carried out in Kostinbrod, Bulgaria. Susceptibility depended on both virus type and cultivar of the plants, with plant age at the time of infection being a determinant factor. Virus infection affected the development of the plants during the whole pepper growing period, but infection had most effect when plants were infected in the earlier phases of growth. The most susceptible cultivar was Shumenski ratund, followed by Zlaten medal and Sofiyska kapiya. CMV infection was more serious than BBWV.
