The potentiality of Lentinus connatus, a new mushroom fungus identified in Tamil Nadu, India, for biomanure production from sugarcane trash (Saccharum officinarum L.), was studied in comparison with existing biodegrader Pleurotus sajor-caju. Lentinus connatus elaborated high lignocellulolytic enzymes and biomass production compared to P. sajor-caju. Pit method of composting with periodical turning, using L. connatus with calcium carbonate (activator) drastically reduced carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio. High macro- and micronutrients levels were recorded by this treatment. In the greenhouse, soil application of sugarcane trash biomanure at 18 t/ha and reduced level of urea at 13 kg N/ha significantly reduced the groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) root rot diseases incited by Thanatephorus cucumeris and Corticium rolfsii, compared to normal recommended doses of inorganic fertilizers.
