Back in the 1970s, the drycleaning industry was hit by a bombshell called polyester. It seems hard to believe that a fabric could put almost a third of the industry out of business. And that's because it didn't! It did, however, make a great excuse. Consumers were enchanted by the first wash-and-wear fabric that didn't need to be ironed and could mimic many common weaves and weights.
