Current there is a move to find renewable resources to supplant the need to deplete our global assets and this trend has led to research into the production of natural dyes on commercial scale. To make this possible, it is necessary to study and optimize the dye production in species of interest so that the crop that is produced can compete market dominated by relatively cheaply produced synthetic products. Several natural plant dyes were used alongside indigo, before dyes were produced synthetically, including species from many different genera and families. Natural dyes are safe and compatible with environment. They also have medicinal and curative properties. Natural dyes are soft in colour, cool to eyes and good to skin.
