Tide of optimism on tanker market

Time-charter freight rates for 80,000-120,000t Aframax vessels rose by $3,750/d from the first quarter to $26,750/d in April-June, while rates for 120,000-200,000t Suezmax vessels rose by $1,000/d to $34,000/d, according to ship- ping broker Intermodal. Persistent firm crude demand from China and India, expanding global refining capacity and the sluggish pace of new vessel arrivals — up by just 1pc from January-March — drove the rise.
