The pharmacokinetics of parbendazole in sheep.

The plasma concentrations of parbendazole were determined after oral administration of 20 mg/kg of the drug to 5 sheep. Blood samples were collected at intervals after administration and the plasma assayed for parbendazole using HPLC. Maximum mean plasma concentrations of 0.08 mug/ml occurred at 6 h after administration and decreased to undetectable concentrations (detection limit 0.01 mug/ml) at 48 h after administration. The lower anthelmintic activity of parbendazole in comparison with fenbendazole and oxfendazole may be due to its rapid metabolism to anthelmintically inactive metabolites.
