IEA increases oil price assumptions

The IEA's 2008 World Energy Outlook (WEO), released on 12 November, incorporates a significant re-evaluation of the likely influences on energy prices up to 2030. "The era of cheap oil is over," executive director Nobuo Tanaka states in the foreword to the WEO. Oil field decline rates assessed in the WEO suggest that 43mn b/d of gross new capacity needs to be added by 2030 to keep supply steady, with 2lmn b/d extra needed to meet higher demand in its reference scenario, which assumes no new energy policies from mid-2008.
