Taxpayers are encouraged to pay taxes online, particularly since face-to-face meetings with tax collectors often lead to bribes. Those using the online system also benefit from extended deadlines. The Thailand Revenue Department introduced electronic filing of the value-added tax (VAT) in 2001, and e-filing services for all types of tax returns were in place by 2003. Taxpayers can download electronic-filing tax forms from the department's website . All Thai companies must meet International Accounting Standards when preparing financial statements and tax returns. Although there are no provincial or municipal income taxes, local authorities began to levy some indirect taxes for the first time in 1999. Both the VAT and the specific business tax include local-tax components.
