Latvia’s Baltijas Ekspresis is to invest ?1.7mn ($1.9mn) from last year’s profits in upgrading its locomotive fleet. It plans to buy new 2TE116 locomotives in September. The company’s fleet consists of 21 main-line engines, 18 2M62 models, three 2TE116 models and 16 ChME3 shunting locomotives. The company plans to gradually replace all 2M62 locomotives with more powerful 2TE116 models. The latter can pull 5,400-5,500t trains to Ventspils, while the former can only handle trains of 4,900t.
