Japan buys heavy sweet grades after tsunami

Japanese firms are buying more Asia-Pacific heavy- sweet burning crude for power generation. The 11 March earthquake and tsunami in Japan left around 12.4GW of nuclear generation capacity in the coun- try shut in (AGM, 21 March, p2). Tokyo utility Tepco has been buying March, April and May-loading Indonesian Minas, Duri, Cinta and Widuri, as well as Vietnamese Sutu Den and Sudanese Nile Blend. The firm has lifted output from oil-fired power plants and restarted idled facili- ties to compensate for the loss in nuclear power production.
