Japan looks to post-nnuclear future

Japan will be hard pressed to replace all of its nuclear power with oil and natural gas-fired plants. Public opposition to nuclear power has intensified in Japan in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami in March that damaged the Fukushima-Daiichi power plant. Growing safety fears have forced all but 11 of Japan's 54 commercial nuclear reactors to shut. And public and political pressure is growing to abandon nuclear power entirely (AGM, 16 May, p3).
