US derivatives legislation gets more teeth

The US Senate is discussing amendments to a financial reform bill that would sharply increase oversight of over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives, including oil swaps. Agriculture committee chair Blanche Lincoln has introduced a section that broadens oversight of OTC derivatives and prohibits federal assistance to swaps dealers in connection with trading in swaps or securities-based swaps.
