Lead Concentrations in Sediments and Blue-Winged Teals (Anas discors) From El Palmar State Reserve, Yucatan, Mexico

Most research on Pb in birds has focused on waterfowl killed by hunters, although terrestrial birds and some mammals have been studied. Shot ingestion and insertion into muscle tissue are two direct consequences of hunting (Fisher et al. 2006; Guillemain et al. 2007; Buekers et al. 2009; Franson et al. 2009). Pb shot remains in the gizzard for approximately 3 weeks, during which it erodes, thus releasing Pb, which is absorbed and distributed in the organism and causing Pb poisoning. In the blood, Pb generally has a half-life of approximately 2 weeks (Sanin et al. 1998), whereas it can remain in high concentrations for weeks or even months in liver and kidney.
