EGYPT: development of Rebar Production in 2001

Rebar production in Egypt in 2001 exceeded the production levels achieved in 2000 by about 365 tons. Thus, according to the initial estimates production reached about 3.5 million tons. This increase came to meet the improved demand in the domestic market and it was also due to putting two new projects for rebar production into the commissioning stage during 2001. These two projects are Beshay and Al-Attal with a production capacity of up to one million tons per year. It is also expected that the entry of new producers will affect allocation of the companies' share in the market. AI Ezz -Al Dekheila Company still has the biggest share in the Egyptian market. Their share has reached about 66.5 percent of the total consumption of the market. Estimates indicate the raise of the apparent consumption in 2001 up to 3.4 million tons per year. This figure has exceeded the consumption levels of 2000 but it still is below the levels of both 1998 and 1999.
