Political risk has always been part of oil markets. It seems the source of much of that risk now lies in Washington. US Treasury Department sanctions are targeting individuals close to Russian president Vladimir Putin. This has sent ripples into oil markets that are still adjusting to the mass exodus of banks triggered by the Federal Reserve’s rethinking of its rules in the wake of the financial crisis. It is another example of politics threatening efficient commodity market operations.
