Overall responsibility for the sector is vested in the Supreme Petroleum Council (SPC),which was set up in 1974,the year before the oil industry was nationalized.The Council is chaired by the Prime Minister and its other members consist of six government ministers (the Deputy Prime Minister,the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs,and the Ministers of ForeignN Affairs,Petroleum and Minerals,Finance,Commerce and Economy,and Planning) and six suitably quaified representatives from the private sector,who are appointed by the Emir for three-year terms.
