摘要

Phase 1 of the project for interconnecting the power transmission networks of member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) was completed at the end of July, after the power grids of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait had been connected at a cost of $1.4 billion. It is known as the North Grid and has a capacity of 5,000 MW. This will be followed by a second phase, to be called the South Grid, which will interconnect the networks of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman. The whole system is due to be fully operational by 2011. The Sultanate of Oman is already linked to the UAE network, but it has not yet confirmed that it will join the regional grid.
