Gas Exports Rose to 936 Billion Cubic Meters in 2008

The year 2008 was a very difficult one for the world economy in general and for the oil sector in particular, but as far as the international natural gas industry is concerned, several key indicators remained very positive last year. According to Cedigaz, world gas production and consumption increased by 4% to 3,055.2 billion cubic meters in 2008, while gas exports were 3% up at 936.2 billion cubic meters, which represents an excellent performance against the backdrop of such economic, financial and energy turmoil. In the case of exports, Cedigaz estimates that exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) dipped by 0.5% to 225.7 billion cubic meters in 2008, while exports of natural gas by pipeline increased by 4.2% to 710.4 billion cubic meters [Editor's note: See tables on the following pages, which are reproduced by kind permission of Cedigaz].
