Philippines suspends commercial release of GM rice and eggplants

The Philippine Supreme Court has ordered the suspension of the commercial release of genetically modified rice and eggplant(aubergine)products.The higher tribunal issued a”writ of Kalikasan”to that effect,which is designed to protect the constitutional right to a healthy environment.The decision follows a petition submitted by the agriculture group,Farmer-Scientist Partnership for Development(MASIPAG).The ruling relates to the GM vitamin-A enriched Golden Rice or Malusog Rice(GR2E)and the GM borerresistant Bt aubergines,both of which are approved for commercial cultivation in the nation.
