EU Court softens stance on mutagenesis inclusion in GMO law

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that plants produced through in vitro use of mutagenesis can be excluded from the scope of the EU GMO registration Directive (2001/18), provided they have conventionally been used in a number of in vivo applications and have a long safety record with regard to those applications. That relaxes the earlier stance of the Court that all organisms produced through in vitro random mutagenesis were included within the Directive.
