Jersey Shore powers reheat furnace with landfill gas

Jersey Shore Steel Co. uses landfill gas in the new reheat furnace it installed last year. This has allowed the Pennsylvania steel company to save 15 percent in energy costs. The gas is the result for the natural decaying of garbage. When the landfill was built 15-20 years ago, pipes were laid at the bottom as part of an extraction system to remove the gas as it's formed. Water vapor then is removed. Jersey Shore started using a new Bricmont 40-ton/hour walking-hearth reheat furnace late last year. It actually started using the landfill gas in summer 1999 while still running its 30-ton Salem furnace. The company pays the landfill 70 percent of the market price per Btu.
