Comoros agricultural production intended mainly for self-consumption

Estimates indicate that around 80% of the agricultural production is intended mainly for self-consumption in Comoros. The main imports are rice, meat, poultry and wheat flour. Agriculture employs almost 80% of the labour force and covers nearly 90% ofexport revenues.Export revenues for main cash crops (vanilla, ylang-ylang, clove) have been declining due to competition on international markets. Yet, vanilla cultivation is slowly starting to take up again. Production rose from 30 tons in 2010 to more than 50 tons in2011. Clove production amounted to 4,000 tons in 2010 but fell considerably in 2011, with an estimated production of 2,500 tons. Ylang-ylang production was estimated at 50 tons in 2011. During these past years, it experienced a bullish trend, characterized by good weather conditions.
