The Integration of Vietnam Steel Industry With The Region

Vietnam has become an official member of ASIAN on 28 July 1995. Vietnam committed to carry out ASEAN's agreements, including the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement(AFTA).From 1 January 2001 the import tax of steel products imported into Vietnam from ASEAN should be gradually reduced until it will reach to 0-5 percent on First January 2006. The non tariff barrier will be also abolished step by step and completed by the year 2006. Vietnam steel industry can not, and should not, avoided the international integration. It should take this as given when conducting new investments or consolidation and closure of existing plants.This paper will present some information about the current situation of Vietnam Steel Industry, time schedule of import tax decrease of steel products imported from ASEAN. It, also, address about some measures implemented for the development of Vietnam steel industry in order to keep up the pace of the development among ASEAN countries in future.
