Agreements for the Supply of 5 Million Tons/Year of LNG to China Starting in 2010-11 Have Been Confirmed

Qatar is to supply 5 million tons/year of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to China starting next year, the Qatari Energy Minister, Mr. Abdallah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, confirmed on 7 March. Speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of the first liaison office of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) in Doha, Mr. al-Attiyah indicated that Petrochina was to lift 3 million tons/year of LNG over 25 years with effect from 2010, "we hope", and that CNOOC would start importing 2 million tons/year in late 2010 or early 2011, also for a 25-year period. The gas will be produced by Qatargas, added the Minister.
