When the oil markets closed on 21 November after a particularly tumultuous week, the price of light sweet crude on the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex) stood at 49.93 per barrel for January 2009 contracts, after touching a low of 48.57/b during the day. On ICE Futures in London, Brent ended the week at 49.19/b for January, after falling as low as 47.40/b during trading on 21 November.
