Investments of 15 Billion Planned for Increasing Petrochemical Production Capacity to 28 Million Tons/Year by 2012

At a press conference held on the occasion of the Qatar Economic Forum held in Doha on 17-18 April,the Managing Director of Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco),Mr.Hamad Rashid al-Mohannadi,disclosed that Qatar was going to invest 15 billion over the next five years in "key" petrochemical projects,with Qapco accounting for 2 billion of the total.Qatar currently has petrochemical production capacity of about 8.5 million tons/year and that is due to be stepped up to nearly 16 million tons/year by 2009 and 28 million tons/year in 2012.At that point,Qatar would be producing "a range of 16 different products,ranging from polyethylene to aromatics and the vinyl chain," explained Mr.al-Mohannadi.
