Growing of own rooted commercial grape varieties was traditionally practiced in India till 1990. There were many reports of failures of young vine and decline of grape vineyards raised on own roots under semi-arid tropical climatic conditions. In manycases problem is associated with salinity, drought and high temperature coupled with defective planting material resulted in failure of vines. The present review describes the activities in asexual propagation to obtain quality planting material for vineyard establishment, using rootstocks to combat prevailing abiotic stresses in better way. This helped in expansion of vineyards under tropical regions on faster pace.
