Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex Selects the Polyethylene and Polypropylene Processes of Univation and Dow Chemical

Coinciding with the commencement of work on the construction of their petrochemical complex in Ras Laffan, known as the Al Sejeel Petrochemical Complex, Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) signed technology licensing contracts for two of its future plants on 13 June. It was in February 2012 that the two companies signed a term sheet agreement for the development of a giant new petrochemical complex in Ras Laffan. The complex will be 80% owned by QP and 20% by Qapco and is scheduled to enter production in 2018 (AOG, 1 March, 2012). Qapco is a joint venture between Industries Qatar (80%) and Total (20%). The complex will include a mixed feedstock cracker running on ethane, butane and naphtha that will afford considerable flexibility and diversity in terms of finished products. The process of Univation Technologies has been licensed for the polyethylene (PE) plant and the Unipol Polypropylene Process Technology of Union Carbide Chemicals & Plastics Technology LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, for the polypropylene (PP) unit. The Al Sejeel complex will have the capacity to produce 2.2 million tons/year of polymers, including PE and PP resins. According to Union Carbide, the PP unit will have a capacity of 540,000 tons/year of various polymers.
