Total and Chevron Could Team Up to Develop the Majnoon and Nahr Bin Umar Fields

Chevron Corporation and Total have not been very talkative in response to a report that they entered into an agreement in 2006 with a view to jointly undertaking the development of the super-giant Majnoon field-whose reserves are estimated at 20 billion barrels by the U.S.Department of Energy-and possibly the Nahr Bin Umar field(sometimes known also as Bin Umar or Nahr Umar).According to the same sources,and especially Dow Jones Newswires,the two companies could also undertake exploration operations together.In both cases,the implementation of this alliance is conditional on an improvement in the security situation and the enactment of the new hydrocarbon law,which the government is trying,amidst huge difficulties,to get passed by Parliament.
