By Acquiring 2% of EDP,Sonatrach Has Become a Shareholder in a European Energy Company for the First Time

Sonatrach has disclosed that it has acquired a 2.035% shareholding in Energias de Portugal (EDP) by purchasing 74,400,000 shares in the Portuguese company.This is the first time that the Algerian national oil company has become a shareholder in a European energy company.Following this acquisition,Sonatrach signed a pact with two other shareholders in EDP giving it a seat on the latter's supervisory board,EDP's "highest strategic authority",explains the Algerian company,adding that "this operation will be followed by future stages [of development],with acquisitions and share purchases in companies operating downstream."
