Central Scenario of WEO 2011 Implies Energy Supply Investments of $38,000 Billion from 2011 to 2035

The World Energy Outlook 2011 (WEO 2011) of the International Energy Agency (IEA), which was published on 9 November, comprises three scenarios for the period to 2035, of which the central scenario (which does not signify that it is the IEA's preferred scenario - see below) is the new policies scenario (see the Agency's Executive Summary of the WEO 2011, which is reproduced in full on pages 43-50). The IEA explains that this scenario implies the "cautious" implementation of the policy commitments made by governments in the recent past. Under this scenario, the cumulative investments required in energy supply infrastructure over the period from 2011 to 2035 are estimated at $38,000 billion (in year-end 2010 dollars), equivalent to $1,500 billion per annum.
