In this book, Mr. Luis Martinez, who is a senior researcher at CERI-Sciences Po in Paris and a North African specialist, looks at what he calls the "violence of the oil rent", starting from an in-depth analysis of the situation in three countries - Algeria, Iraq and Libya. The issue of the "curse" of hydrocarbon resources has been dealt with extensively, especially in the economics and political science literature, but the author is suspicious of hasty conclusions. "This work shows that the oil rent is neither the cause of the absence of democracy, nor an explanatory factor for the slide into violence," says Mr. Martinez. "It was only the resource needed for the manifestation of the destructive potential inherent in revolutionary political organizations."
