Balance of Payments Swung from a Deficit of $11.3 Billion in 2011-12 to a Surplus of $237 Million in 2012-13

Egypt's balance of payments recorded a surplus of $237 million in the 12 months from 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2013, compared with a deficit of $11.3 billion in fiscal 2011-12, according to the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE). The Bank attributes this turnaround to, on the one hand, a 45% drop in the current account deficit to $5.6 billion (from $10.1 billion in 2011-12) and, on the other, to a sharp increase in net capital inflows, which amounted to $9.7 billion in 2012-13 as against $1 billion the year before.
