Biomass industry narrows agenda

Renewal of expiring tax credits and renewable electricity standards are the twin policy focuses for the biomass industry ahead of a major national election, representatives of the industry said in Washington, DC, on 14 October. Extending or replacing the 1603 biomass production tax credit established under the stimulus program is a part of a major push for the industry; the credit is currently set to expire at the end of 2010. A national renewable portfolio standard mandating set levels of renewable fuel use could also propel biomass development and mirror advancements already made by the industry at the state level, and could be a more realistic goal for the government and the industry than a comprehensive greenhouse gas reduction plan.
