Balance of Payments Recorded a Surplus of $3.36 Billion in 2009-10, as Against a Deficit of $3.38 Billion in 2008-09

Egypt's balance of payments recorded a surplus of $3.36 billion in the 2009-10 fiscal year, which ended on 30 June last, as against a deficit of $3.38 billion the year before, according to the Central Bank. The turnaround is mainly attributable to capital movements, which registered a net inflow of $8.32 billion last year compared with one of $2.28 billion in 2008-09. That increase was due to net investments of $7.88 billion in Egyptian equities and Treasury bonds in 2009-10, whereas 2008-09 had seen net investments abroad (capital outflows) of $9.21 billion.
