Weather slowed rail traffic in Q1

Coal carloadings were down in the first quarter of 2007, primarily because of weather. Only two carload commodity groups - Chemicals and Petroleum Products - registered gains from last year, as did intermodal shipments, but that growth failed to offset the drop in originations, Association of American Railroads data indicate. Total commodity carloadings for the first quarter of 2007 were 5.1 million, down 4.5 pct from 5.3 million originations during the same period last year.
