This data shows that over the four quarters between the third quarter 2005 and the third quarter 2006, the railroad that increased its coal rates the most had one-half the increase in coal freight revenue as the other railroads. Figure 1 shows that between the third quarters of 2005 and 2006, NS had much larger rate increases than the other three major coal-carrying railroads. The 12.6 pct average rate increase on NS was 7.6 pct higher than the 5 pct increase on the CSX, 5.4 pct higher than the BNSF 7 pct increase, and 2.3 pct higher than the 10.3 pct average rate increase on the UP. The average rate increases include railroads' fuel surcharge revenue.
