Coal struggles to hold

Direct US coal markets came under more pressure last week, with Central Appalachia leading the declines amid sub-$4/mmBtu natural gas futures and a more than three-year low for European coal swaps. Eastern railroads are moving more coal in the second quarter than during the same period in 2012. And the improvements follow sharp year-over-year declines in first-quarter 2013.
