Abu Dhabi Intends to Play a Key Role in Renewable Energies, Energy Efficiency and Carbon Capture and Storage

In his opening speech to the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi, Mr. Sultan al-Jaber, the Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, an offshoot of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Fund, which is itself a subsidiary of state-owned Mubadala Development Company, stressed that the importance of renewable energies was continuing to be more widely recognized, despite the challenges posed in 2009 by the world economic slowdown. Investments in renewable energies were now estimated at $155 billion, four times the amount in 2004, said Mr. al-Jaber. He pointed to the establishment of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), the first intergovernmental organization devoted to renewable energies, which is headquartered in Abu Dhabi and now has 142 member states (AOG, 16 July, 2009). Mr. al-Jaber also referred to the progress made in this area at local and regional levels. In Abu Dhabi, he said, Masdar was continuing to expand its activities through the implementation of several projects.
