Western railroad BNSF plans to reset the strike price on its fuel surcharge for coal, as well as several other commodities, acknowledging that current fuel pricing trends make it unlikely the price of diesel will dip significantly for some time. The railroad also announced plans for a compensation program should the price of diesel fall below the strike price. The railroad is making the change to reflect current fuel pricing trends, which on a sustained basis have averaged above 2.50 dollars/gallon since 2005, BNSF said.
