EU sulphur directive to raise shipping costs

The directive requires sulphur emissions be reduced to 0.1pc from current requirements of 1pc by 2015, for ships entering, departing, or passing through a designated control area around the North Sea. The area includes east coast UK ports and major coal-receiving terminals in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp. But west coast UK ports such as Liverpool or Hunterston will not escape the cost as routes to these ports pass through the area.
