GIS AND HISTORICAL SCHOLARSHIP: A QUESTION OF SCALE

The answer to the question of whether GIS is changing historical scholarship depends on the level or scale of observation. One must first consider the breadth of scholars doing historical scholarship. In this age of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, it is important to include the diversity of disciplines where an examination of the past is important, including history, geography, ecology, and art, among others. In the broadest or most general sense, the answer to the question is 'no' because scholars have long used different approaches for finding, evaluating, analysing, interpreting, documenting, and presenting information about the past.
