Western coal moves increase despite slower trains

Three of the largest US carriers have increased their weekly coal-loading rates during the past few weeks. At the same time, two of those carriers are seeing reduced train speeds for coal. BNSF continues to lead the way, loading an average 47 164 cars/week during the past four weeks ending Sept. 15 2006, up 13.2 pct over last year. CSX follows with its 31,051 cars/week as a 9.6 pct increase over 2005. UP loadings are up 8.9 pct to 39,976 cars/week. NS loadings remain below 2005 levels.
