US railroads struggled to improve coal volumes beyond year-ago levels as demand for transport continues to outpace supply. The industry the last full week of April hauled 3.7 pct less coal carloads than the same week a year ago, bringing their four-week rolling volume average to 1.5 pct ahead of last year.
